The Grade 2 students are continuously inquiring about relationships and the importance of expressing ones thoughts and feelings in building relationships with others.
We have talked about the difference between thoughts and spoken words and how it is important to understand the effect of the two in our relationship with others.
Differentiating between thoughts and spoken words is important for children because it helps them develop self-control, empathy, and healthier communication.
Children often think quickly but need to learn that not every thought should be spoken, since words can deeply affect others. By pausing to reflect before speaking, they begin to consider people’s feelings, express themselves more respectfully, and solve problems more calmly.
This skill also helps them build stronger, more positive relationships, as they learn to choose words that are kind, helpful, and thoughtful.
Then, we identified different ways on how we can communicate with others.
Teaching communication skills help children share their thoughts and feelings clearly. Through activities like “pass the message,” students practice listening carefully, using words, and expressing ideas. These skills build confidence, strengthen relationships, and help children understand the importance of both speaking and listening in everyday life.
During this activity, we reflected on some of the factors why some people are not able to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively to others.
being anxious or nervous
unsure of what to say
noise around
losing focus on what the intentions are
not talking clearly
not listening intently
negative self-thoughts or talk
Then we identified different ways to communicate with others. We can communicate with others in many ways, and each is very important.
Using words to say how we feel helps others understand us, but if we do not share right away, problems may grow bigger.
Facial expressions show emotions like happiness or sadness, and without them, people may misunderstand how we feel.
Actions and body movements make our message stronger, while not using them can cause confusion.
Writing a note or message allows us to share our thoughts even when we cannot speak directly, but if we don’t, our ideas might be forgotten.
Listening to others shows respect and helps us understand their message, but when we fail to listen, we can miss important information or hurt someone’s feelings.
For the coming weeks, we will tie these ideas together by having awareness on how thoughts, words, expressions, actions, writing, and listening all connect to build strong communication. Students will explore how each skill supports understanding and relationships, and how using them wisely helps prevent misunderstandings.
By reflecting what strategies work best for them and the ones that they need to develop, children will see that communication is not just about talking, but also about listening, showing feelings. This will guide them toward becoming thoughtful communicators who can build caring and respectful relationships with others.
