Sorting Out

This week the Grade 2 continued to learn about and understand their role in each relationship and why it matters.

They communicated through talking, listening, sharing, showing respect, and helping. Knowing these differences helps them build stronger connections and express their thoughts and feelings clearly.

Understanding relationships helped the Grade 2 students know how they connect with family, friends, and others around them. It teaches them respect, kindness, and responsibility.

When they recognize their roles, they learn how to communicate better, solve problems peacefully, and build trust, which supports their growth and emotional well-being.

For the upcoming weeks, they will continue to sort out all the concepts they gained.

They are writing fictional stories that explore real-life problems in creative ways. Through characters and dialogue, they will show how misunderstandings happen and how people solve them by listening, sharing feelings, and working together.

Storytelling helps children practice empathy, communication skills, and problem-solving while making learning fun and meaningful.

What are your thoughts?

The Grade 2 students are continuously inquiring about relationships and the importance of expressing ones thoughts and feelings in building relationships with others.

We have talked about the difference between thoughts and spoken words and how it is important to understand the effect of the two in our relationship with others.

Differentiating between thoughts and spoken words is important for children because it helps them develop self-control, empathy, and healthier communication.

Children often think quickly but need to learn that not every thought should be spoken, since words can deeply affect others. By pausing to reflect before speaking, they begin to consider people’s feelings, express themselves more respectfully, and solve problems more calmly.

This skill also helps them build stronger, more positive relationships, as they learn to choose words that are kind, helpful, and thoughtful.

Then, we identified different ways on how we can communicate with others.

Teaching communication skills help children share their thoughts and feelings clearly. Through activities like “pass the message,” students practice listening carefully, using words, and expressing ideas. These skills build confidence, strengthen relationships, and help children understand the importance of both speaking and listening in everyday life.

During this activity, we reflected on some of the factors why some people  are not able to communicate their thoughts and feelings effectively to others.

being anxious or nervous
unsure of what to say
noise around
losing focus on what the intentions are
not talking clearly
not listening intently
negative self-thoughts or talk

Then we identified different ways to communicate with others. We can communicate with others in many ways, and each is very important.

Using words to say how we feel helps others understand us, but if we do not share right away, problems may grow bigger.

Facial expressions show emotions like happiness or sadness, and without them, people may misunderstand how we feel.

Actions and body movements make our message stronger, while not using them can cause confusion.

Writing a note or message allows us to share our thoughts even when we cannot speak directly, but if we don’t, our ideas might be forgotten.

Listening to others shows respect and helps us understand their message, but when we fail to listen, we can miss important information or hurt someone’s feelings.

For the coming weeks, we will tie these ideas together by having awareness on how thoughts, words, expressions, actions, writing, and listening all connect to build strong communication. Students will explore how each skill supports understanding and relationships, and how using them wisely helps prevent misunderstandings.

By reflecting what strategies work best for them and the ones that they need to develop, children will see that communication is not just about talking, but also about listening, showing feelings. This will guide them toward becoming thoughtful communicators who can build caring and respectful relationships with others.

Thoughts, Feelings, Actions

The Wall of Thoughts, Feelings, and Actions is a space where we share what we think, feel, and do. By posting ideas and reflections, we see how our thoughts and feelings guide our actions, helping us build respect, kindness, and stronger relationships with others

Oftentimes, we tend to act and forget to pause and revisit our thoughts and feelings. These actions lead us to difficulties and regrets that impact our relationship with others.

A cause doesn’t always end with just one effect. Like dominoes, one action can lead to many different outcomes. Our choices and perspectives guide what happens next, shaping our relationships and lives.

Our choices create effects—good or bad. Every action is like a little cause that changes how relationships grow.

But what are the different kinds of relationships we have identified in our research?
Family
Friendship
Romantic
Acquaintances
Professional
Stranger
Mutual
Situationship
Platonic

With a partner, choose one type of relationship (family, friends, teacher, acquaintance, stranger, or professional). Show examples of this relationship by either drawing a picture together or acting it out for the class.

Then together they shared their expertise to the class.

As part of the Literacy integration, the Grade 2 students started the planning stage in story writing. With the goal of informing other students about ways and strategies to build and keep relationships.

Our Research Journey

Relationships shape who we are, how we learn, and how we connect with the world. In our recent project, students explored the different kinds of relationships we experience in life—family, friends, acquaintances, professionals, and even strangers.

By diving into research and sharing what they discovered through creative applications and visual presentations, they not only deepened their knowledge but also developed valuable communication and collaboration skills.

To bring their research to life, students used a variety of applications:

Canva & Google Slides to design infographics and posters.

Seesaw to record short video reflections.

Movie maker to record a news report

Technology gave students the chance to combine facts with creativity, making their projects both engaging and informative.

The highlight of the project was when students presented their work to the school community. Using posters, slideshows, and digital displays, they explained the importance of healthy relationships and encouraged their peers to reflect on their own connections.

The colorful visuals and thoughtful explanations showed how much effort and teamwork went into their learning journey.

Through this project, students learned more than just the types of relationships—they practiced critical skills like research, communication, digital literacy, and public speaking.

Most importantly, they realized that strong, respectful relationships are the foundation for a happy school environment and a supportive community.

In the upcoming weeks, students will take their learning even further. They will explore how our own thoughts and actions affect our relationships with others.

Through role-plays, class discussions, and real-life examples, students might ask questions such as:

How do my words make others feel?

What happens when I listen carefully?

How can my choices strengthen or harm a friendship?

By reflecting on these questions, they will discover that building strong relationships doesn’t only depend on others—it also depends on how we act, speak, and think.

This next stage of the inquiry will help students grow in empathy, responsibility, and self-awareness, skills that will support them not only in school but also in life.
