Flying Smarter

The Grade 2 students were fortunate to have Mr. Inman join our class and let the students experience flying a drone. 

In today’s fast-changing world, drones have become powerful tools that help people work smarter, faster, and more safely. 

It was mentioned in our discussions that drones are technology that help people in many ways. 

Among the uses mentioned were the following:

 

WORK: constructions and engineering, sending messages (government), they use in google maps, wars (to spy), and during emergency situations.

Many industries now rely on drones because they can reach places that are difficult or dangerous for humans. For example, construction workers use drones to check tall buildings, farmers use them to monitor crops, and rescue teams send drones to look for people during emergencies. By doing these tasks quickly and accurately, drones help reduce risks and save valuable time.

Drones also make communication easier. With built-in cameras and real-time video, teams can see the same information at the same moment, even when they are far apart. Instead of waiting for reports or photos, people can make decisions instantly by watching live footage from a drone. This improves teamwork and helps everyone understand a situation clearly.

In addition, drones help businesses share information with customers. 

 

ENTERTAINMENT: making videos about celebrations, capturing photos, creativity

A drone can capture aerial photos and videos that show progress, results, or important updates. This kind of communication is not only efficient but also engaging.

Overall, drones are transforming the way people work and connect. They help us communicate better, solve problems faster, and create safer environments for everyone.

EDUCATION: geography, mapping, studying animals, STEM

 They support learning, as children can explore technology, coding, and problem-solving while flying small educational drones. 

HOME: Safety, record family memories from vacations, check the roof if there is a leak or broken

Drones offer families convenience, safety, and fun in everyday life. They help capture memories, turning simple events like birthdays or picnics into memorable videos. Families can also use drones to check rooftops, gutters, or large yards without climbing or risking injury. For those with pets, drones make it easy to monitor animals outdoors. Overall, drones bring families closer through shared activities while making home tasks easier and safer.

Drones are very important technology that help organize how people work and communicate better. It not only improve productivity but also enhance safety and creativity in our lives.

 As technology continues to evolve, drones will remain an essential tool, helping the world work smarter, communicate better, and solve problems with greater precision.

 

Curious Minds

The Grade 2 students explored the exciting world of robotics by assembling LEGO pieces to create robots with real purposes. Through this hands-on activity, they discovered how technology plays an important role in our daily lives and how even small robots can be designed to help people. 

This learning experience showed students that new ideas can grow into inventions that make life easier for everyone. By working like young engineers, the children developed their STEM skills, practiced critical thinking, and learned to stay open-minded as they created and tested their own robot designs. 

Engineering and robotics connect strongly to our unit because they show how technology can be designed to help people work and communicate better. 

Engineers think of problems that people face and use their ideas to build solutions. Robots are one example of these solutions—they can be created to do jobs that make life easier, safer, or faster for humans.

 By learning how to build and design robots, students begin to understand that technology is not just something we use—it is something people create to improve the way we live, work, and connect. 

When children design a robot with a purpose, they experience firsthand how technology starts with an idea and becomes something useful that can help others.

Engineers rarely work alone. 

When students build robots in groups, they practice solving problems together, sharing ideas, and listening to each other.

The future of technology begins with curious minds—

and Grade 2 is already on its way!

 

Tech Detectives

This week, our Grade 2 students transformed from being a Thing Finder to Tech Detectives as they explored a technology app of their choice. 

With an iPad or laptop and curious minds switched on, they researched on each app’s name, logo, and main purpose. 

After completing their research and designing their presentations in Canva, students learned just how important strong presentation skills are. Presenting helps them communicate their ideas clearly and confidently, turning their hard work into something they can proudly share with others. 

It teaches them to speak with expression, make eye contact, and explain information in a way that others can understand. Presentation skills also build confidence, teamwork, and organization as students learn to prepare, practice, and respond to questions. 

 
By combining research, creativity, and clear communication, students become stronger learners and more effective communicators—skills they will use throughout their lives.

 

Since G2 students loved discovering how apps help people stay connected at home, at work, and in school—whether through messaging, sharing photos, learning new skills, or organizing daily tasks.

  

The classroom was silent but with an air of excitement as students shared the apps they researched on the different apps.

As they proudly share their findings they even taught their classmates a thing or two!

 

But our Tech Detectives didn’t stop there. They also learned a bit about essential lessons on online safety. Students discussed why personal information should stay private, how strong passwords protect accounts, and what red flags to look for when something online doesn’t feel right. 

 

They even identified dangers like talking to strangers online, clicking unknown links, or spending too much time on screens.

They were incredibly proud of their curiosity, creativity, and growing digital awareness. Our young learners are well on their way to becoming responsible, confident users of technology in our connected world!

Technology and Instructions

Instruction writing is important for Grade 2 students because it helps them learn how to organize their thoughts in clear, logical steps. 

It teaches them to use sequence words like first, next, and finally, which build strong writing and thinking skills. Writing instructions also improves reading comprehension, as students must understand and explain processes accurately. 

It encourages careful observation, planning, and attention to detail. Through instruction writing, students learn how to communicate ideas clearly and help others follow directions. 

These skills are valuable not only in schoolwork but also in real-life situations where giving and following instructions are important

To connect our Unit with Writing and Reading skills, we invited Tamaki’s mom to join us in baking a cake. Of course, what better way for students to understand the importance of following instructions than by looking forward to enjoying the delicious sponge cake they helped make! 

This hands-on activity allowed students to see how following steps carefully leads to a successful result — both in baking and in writing.

Next week, the students will use these skills to create an Instructional writing in exploring our Line of Inquiry "How technology is used and organized."

 

"SPEAKY" - SPOOKY WEEK

A lot of speaking and spooking week for the Second Graders!

CONNECTIONS

Grade 2 students had an exciting experience making connections with the teachers through interview to learn how technology is used in teaching, communication, and organization. 

They discovered that teachers use tools like tablets, projectors, and online platforms to make lessons engaging and interactive. Technology also helps teachers communicate quickly with parents and colleagues through emails and digital apps.

 In addition, it keeps the school organized by helping manage schedules, announcements, and resources efficiently. 

Through their interviews, students learned that technology plays a big role in making learning easier, faster, and more connected for everyone at DSKI.

COMMUNICATORS

The Grade 2 students learned how to ask thoughtful questions that help them understand ideas that are confusing or new to them. They created their own interview questions, always referring back to the central idea of the unit and their own wanderings. 

By doing this, they made sure that their questions were meaningful and connected to the concept they needed to explore. This experience helped them develop confidence in speaking, listening, and expressing curiosity while learning more about how technology influences the way people work and connect with each other.

TRICK OR TREAT AT DSKI

The Halloween spirit filled DSKI as students enjoyed a fun-filled Trick or Treat event! Everyone came dressed in creative and spooky costumes, from superheroes to witches and pumpkins. 

Laughter and excitement echoed through the halls as students went door to door collecting treats from different classrooms. 

Teachers and staff joined the fun, decorating rooms and handing out sweets. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to celebrate together, show kindness, and enjoy the festive spirit.

The event truly brought smiles, joy, and a sense of community to our school’s Halloween celebration!
